More About the Workshops

Writers can choose from one of two writing workshops or a combination writing/ publishing workshop. The writing workshops, taught by Arvel Gray, marry the principles of writing and communication with hands-on experience, providing participants with a safe and nurturing environment to develop their storytelling proficiency.

The publishing workshop, lead by Mary-Ann Kirkby, guides authors through the maze of the publishing world, giving them valuable insight into the work of agents, publishers, editors and distributors, and instruction in designing, printing and selling their book.

Workshop I Ready, Set, Write!

These workshops are for beginner writers who have a story to share but need help in putting ideas to paper. The workshops combine theory, practicum and constructive critiques, providing students with an opportunity to sharpen their storytelling skills and bring their own experiences to life. Learn how to focus a story; how to create a beginning, middle and end; how to add detail; how to build tension; and how to avoid lazy words.

Workshop II Write On!

These workshops are available for intermediate writers who need assistance in developing stories and polishing existing prose. Building on the lessons of Workshop I, aspiring writers are given manuscript evaluation, practical suggestions and editing tips to move their work forward. Learn about the power of language; writing styles; character development; point of view; how to deal with the passage of time; structure and organization; and how to effectively employ empathy and emotion.

Yes You Can!

Based on personal experience, the facilitator provides participants with key strategies in approaching publishers and agents, the latest trends in technology, the pros and cons of self-publishing, designing and printing books and covers, how to market material and garner media attention, and negotiating rights and legal issues.
